Deputy Undersecretary of Defense (1981-1988)
Dr. Bryen helped to reinvigorate our multilateral export control regime during the Reagan years, an effort that unmistakeably contributed to the U.S. victory in the Cold War. As the founder and director of the Defense Technology Security Agency (DTSA), he also opposed U.S. sales of dual-use technology to Saddam Hussein at a time when this was unpopular. I wrote about both efforts in my 1992 book The Death Lobby, How the West Armed Iraq.
Steve Bryen always has been a visionary, understanding threats before they materialize and conceiving policies to counter them. In the late 1990s, he served on the security board of Loral Space Systems, and helped them devise ways of protecting their technology from Chinese espionage. For this reason, he was appointed by the Speaker of the House of Representatives to the U.S. China Economic and Security Commission. More recently, he served as Chairman of the board of Finmecannica North America, Inc., and introduced the Italian defense giant to the U.S. marketplace. Today he is chairman and president of SDB Partners, a private security consulting firm.
For many years, Steve and I served together on the advisory board of the Jewish Institute for National Security Affairs. I am proud to have his endorsement and, if elected, look forward to continuing to work with Steve on security issues affecting our nation and our allies.
