We need fundamental tax reform, not incremental fixes that tinker around the edges of the huge problems that we face.
And tax reform must be tied to entitlement reform, since that is the Great White Whale about to sink our economy. With the huge imbalance in revenues verses expenditures in these programs, which I detail on my Jobs page, it’s clear that without fundamental, structural reforms to ensure the continued solvency and fairness of these programs, we will go bankrupt and our seniors and the poor will be left to fend for themselves.
I believe we need a New Social Contract in America that is fair, broad-based, fiscally-sound, and that unleashes our economy and permanently limits the size and intrusiveness of government.
I personally favor the Fair Tax, which is predicated on the repeal of the 16th amendment. The Fair Tax will generate huge savings to individuals, eliminate $800 billion in compliance costs by getting rid of the IRS, and liberate small businesses and entrepreneurs to create jobs, not hire accountants and lawyers to fend off government bureaucrats.
The Fair Tax has the added benefit of waking up ordinary Americans to the cost of government, since with every purchase you make, you will see the line item for federal tax paid. I think this will have a salutary effect, since it will prompt many Americans who otherwise don’t pay attention to the cost or size of government to start asking questions. Why am I paying so much? What is government doing with all this money? Do we really need all these programs?
Rest assured: There is no way I will favor a national consumer tax with the Income tax system still in place. In order to establish a Fair Tax system, we MUST repeal the 16th amendment first and get rid of the IRS.
